Established in Germany in 1923, and with 80+ years of boot making experience Lowa hiking boots have earned a reputation for fitting great. Always using the best materials to generate the best fit and performance may be a little more expensive, but they are a superior value, lasting longer than boots made with cheaper materials. Additionally, the average pair of Lowa hiking boots lasts from 5 – 7 years, so over their lifetime they will consume about half the resources of conventional hiking boots, and further reduce the total number of boots that end up in landfills.

Before Gore-Tex, boots were made comfortable using soft leather linings. Lowa still uses some of the best leathers from Germany and Italy to make linings that hug your foot, creating the next best thing to a custom fitted boot. Today, many hikers, especially those in hot, dry climates where Gore-tex is not necessarily required, swear by the feel and comfort of leather.

Two of Lowa’s more recent design innovations are the Flex Fit and Heel Truss. The Flex Fit allows for a more natural movement of the ankle, without sacrificing stability. The Heel Truss provides a firmer heel pocket and also strengthens the connection between the boots sole and ankle shaft. Lowa’s unique monowrap sole construction wraps your foot in a stable, supportive (yet breathable) frame. Also, understanding that there are differences in the way men and women stand and stride, the ankle shaft of the men’s boots are set at a 2 degree angle to provide a more balanced stance. Greater balance also means less foot fatigue and a shorter break-in period. This slight offset of the ankle shaft is not present in the women’s hiking boots, since a woman’s stance is more upright.

The women’s AL-X 79 XCR Mid is a lightweight and flexible design that provides the same excellent comfort on the trail as it does on the street. The breathable Gore-Tex lining provides waterproof comfort while the flexible rubber outsole provides excellent traction on all types of surfaces.

The Renegade GTX - A water repellent leather, cordura and Gore-Tex construction make this the perfect lightweight boot for day hikes, rock scrambling, or simple everyday outdoor activities. The women’s style have narrower heels and specially padded tongues for extra comfort.

Another lightweight boot for weekend hiker is the Zephyr GTX Mid.
Comfort and performance are provided by the Gore-Tex lining (waterproof and breathable) and split leather uppers (supportive and flexible). Additional support and cushioning is provided by the Polyurethane (PU) midsole. The outsole is also designed to provide superior traction on both wet and dry trails.

For more rugged adventures, the Banff Pro is an excellent lightweight boot for backpacking and carrying heavier loads. The buttery soft leather lining provides custom-fit like comfort, while the breathable insole wicks moisture away from the foot. These combine to eliminate pressure points, and minimizes friction to reduce foot fatigue. The larger heel on a stiff Vibram sole (with deep lugs) provides additional support and traction on uneven terrain.

An excellent ladies backpacking boot is the Khumbu Mid GTX, which was specifically created for superior ankle support. In addition to the padded ankle support, the Gore-Tex lining keeps your feet dry and comfortable regardless of the weather. The Vibram sole, combined with a PU-EVA midsole provides excellent support and stability on the most rocky of terrains.
